Funny, Must-Have Bible Cliff Notes

I’ll be honest, I only bought this book because I’ve heard Angie Smith speak and enjoyed her. It sounded a little boring to me. I was wrong. It’s like funny Bible cliff notes. I have never understood the Bible in such a way that I do after reading this. The way she calls out the common threads of the Bible stories helped me better comprehend and actually makes me less intimidated to read the Bible itself. I am so thankful for this book!

Bible Overview

This feels like I asked a friend to explain the Bible to me. It’s very easy to comprehend, accurate, and covers most of the Bible. Some of the jokes were cheesy, but that was my only complaint.

Not reading the Book!

I wish I could sugar coat this or put it sweeter but….the Author is not really reading this book. Within the first few chapters she has added commentary and skipping over several paragraphs. Seems like she treating this more like a Podcast rather then just reading the book. I use Audible to help with focus, I am dyslexic, but It is very challenging with this reading.

I hope there will be a redo!

High-Level Overview of Bible from Beginning-End

The book is a helpful overview of the Bible from the beginning to end. The author provides a big picture and organizes information in a way that makes understanding easy. For example, she says that all the laws mentioned in Leviticus are just a fuller version of the Ten Commandments. The book of Numbers was written during the time when the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness. Deuteronomy includes the lasts five speeches of Moses. All these one sentence summaries are perfect for quickly understanding the purpose of each book.

She also organizes the major and minor prophets by where they prophesized (either the Northern Kingdom- Israel, or the Southern Kingdom- Judah), and divides them into different waves. The first wave is before the Northern Kingdom's invasion by the Assyrians. The second wave is before the Babylonian's invasion of the Southern Kingdom. The third wave is during exile. All this is a very helpful way to organize and remember the different prophets.

The last three chapters focus on the New Testament. She goes through the different gospels, disciples, along with Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. She also covers the epistles and Revelation.

Its an amazingly quick overview and perfect for those who are new to reading their Bible or feel intimidated and want to get a high-level overview first.

Angie Smith narrates her own book, and she is so funny! She really makes it come to life. I highly recommend listening to her. She does go off-script sometimes, so listening and reading the book at the same time doesn't always go together, but easily doable. She clearly loves Jesus and it shows in every chapter. She continuingly hints of Jesus throughout the Old Testament chapters. Very enjoyable audiobook!

Amazing

I hesitated to read this book, but my wife talked me into it and I'm so glad I did! There's alot here for people like me that struggle with the general timeliness and people and relationships. Angie does an amazing job keeping you engaged and entertained while delivering alot of strong moments goosebumps and deep feelings I even had tears in my eyes a couple of times. Loved it!

Seamless Bible Study is Better, Excessive Jokes

So I had done the Seamless Bible Study and even went to the Lifeway site for the videos for the study (they have a free series you can watch and a different one for purchase both are good) and was hoping this would go even deeper in the exploration of understanding the Bible for someone new. This book did not do that. Angie states up front this is a fly over view and not an in depth look at the Bible, however this was even more zoomed out than the Bible study and did not add anything to Seamless. I also don't think I would have been satisfied had I not already read Seamless because this is SUPER zoomed out and I never felt very grounded in my understanding of the stories she is drawing together. Also normally the playful, silly, conversational style Angie brings works for me and played well in Seamless and the videos, but they were incredibly annoying and distracting in this audiobook. Angie's near constant self referencing and jokes really started to irk me amidst already not feeling like I was receiving a good overview and understanding of the Bible. I did not get this book looking for a memoir of Angie and her personal journey, I have purchased her other books that are focused on her personal life and experience with her faith for that reason. I just did not feel like this delivered on what it promised but would highly recommend her Bible study on this topic and the videos. Again I do warn folks to listen to the samples for both so you can get a taste for her humor based style as I know this will absolutely not work for some and positively engage others. Overall I will be honest this was a disappointment and I would not recommend when I feel her other work does a much better job.

Not just for those that are new to the word

I didn’t know I needed this book. What I mean is I’ve been in my Bible for a long time and I’m pretty familiar with it.

In the beginning I wasn’t sure if it was going to just be a general skim but as I worked through it, Angie called out so many beautiful connections that I hadn’t seen before or maybe I had but needed a gentle and loving reminder.

This book isn’t just for new believers, or those that are new to digging into the word. It’s also for those of us that believe the Bible is living and growing the more we are open to learning.

I also love when authors read their own works and especially enjoyed this one.

Great Listen and simple breakdown.

Loved Angie's break down of the Bible. She explains books and significant pieces so well. Angie adds her own humour and life into her reading. I learned a lot and had a few good laughs along the way.
