Mack might be, to all intents and purposes, a normal looking human, but she lives with a pack of shapeshifters in Cornwall in rural England after being dumped there by her mother when she was just a young child. She desperately wants to be accepted by her surrogate family, not least because a lot of them hate her for merely being human, but for some reason her blood just won't allow the transformation to occur.

There are three absolutes in Mairi Wallace's world: 1. The Mages rule every city in Scotland with terrible, violent authority. 2. It is not physically possible for any woman to wield magic. 3. Mairi does not have a voice. She is about to learn that none of these things have to be true. From twisted wynds and tartan shops to a dangerous daemon and malevolent ravens, the future of a tattered nation might lie with one solitary woman.

I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. I don’t know who killed me. All I know is that they might try again.

Since the moment I was ripped from my mother's womb, I've been an outcast among my own kind. The Sidhe might possess magical Gifts, unbelievable wealth, and unfathomable power, but I don't want a thing to do with them. I ran away from their lands in the Highlands of Scotland when I was 11 years old, and I've never looked back. I don't need a clan. Let's get one thing straight - Ivy Wilde is not a heroine. In fact she's probably the last witch in the world you'd call if you needed a magical helping hand, regardless of her actual abilities. If it were down to Ivy, she'd spend all day every day on her sofa, where she could watch TV, munch junk food, and talk to her feline familiar to her heart's content. However, when a bureaucratic disaster ends up with Ivy as the victim of a case of mistaken identity, she's yanked very unwillingly into Arcane Branch.

In a world of darkness where royal vampires are in charge, I spend my days working as a knight in the city formerly known as London. Instead of a lance and a horse, I rely on my trusty axe, Babe, and ride the occasional dragon. Every day, new threats emerge that require a dash of magic and a dollop of attitude. Naturally, danger comes with the territory. What no one knows is just how dangerous it is for me. If our vampire overlords discover what I am, they’ll execute me on the spot — no questions asked — which is why I avoid them at all costs. Until now.

For a decade, I’ve hated the supernaturals who owned my world. I hunted them. I killed them. And now, in the most grand twist of fate - I am bonded to one of them. Oh, the irony. Being a supernatural bounty hunter isn’t exactly a popular job. But after the magic wars, there aren’t many things a human can do that will put food on the table. Publisher's Summary
Saiya Buchanan is a wraith, able to detach her shadow from her body and send it off to do her bidding. But, unlike most of her kin, Saiya doesn't deal in death. Instead, she trades secrets - and in the goblin besieged city of Stirling in Scotland, they're a highly prized commodity. It might just be, however, that the goblins have been hiding the greatest secret of them all.
When Gabriel de Florinville, a Dark Elf, is sent as royal envoy into Stirling and takes her prisoner, Saiya is not only going to uncover the sinister truth. She's also going to realize that sometimes the deepest secrets are the ones locked within your own heart.

Great book and superb narration!
This is a great stand alone book. The story was well written and the characters were extremely relatable. I really enjoyed it and finished it in a day! The narrator did SUCH a great job with each character. I was never confused at who was speaking since everyone had their own distinct voices. I would like be for her to narrate more book in the UF genre!

The first half was great!
Interesting world, interesting characters, intriguing premise--this book had everything!
[Don't read any farther if you hope to enjoy this book]
As soon as the 'romantic connection' happened, it all became a rote checklist of plot points from every 1980s Harlequin romance: Man has all the information and power; token sex scene (she's a virgin, of course); man says things that are genuinely unforgivable; she endures all the crap he feels like dishing out; and in spite of everything that she achieves it's eventually only his say-so that gets other people to take her seriously.
My advice is to listen to the first half twice and then make up your own ending.

good book, but not without flaws
I liked the book a lot, and it was paced just right, making you want to continue reading.
but the "hero" wasn't really my cup of tea. A bit to high and mighty and free with his hands for my taste. I hate the "I'll have you begging for my touch" line very much, so that wasn't in his favor.
the heroine was nice and independent one minute and gagging for it the other, it gave me whiplash. She wasn't wholely unlikable though. She was brave and really tried to hold her own most of the time.
The story kept me interested enough that it was hard to put down and I liked the narration a lot.

Should have been a Trilogy 😒
I'm so happy I finally listened to this book. It was sitting in my library for a couple of months. I think i put it away because it started a bit slow, but this second time around that wasnt the case. I just fell into the story. So I misjudged this one a bit. My bad 😕
Set in a present day fantasy world, the city of Stirling has not only been taken over by the Goblins, it's also under siege. The citizens haven't left the walls of the city in over three years. Food and supplies are low. Our lead character, Saiya, has been able to feed herself by selling small secrets. She is able to get those secrets because she is a wraith. I won't explain, so read the book. When the Dark Elves come to investigaste how things are in Stirling, thats when things are set in motion.
I found WRAITH interesting but I don't think this was not a stand alone book. The lead character is the only known female Wraith... so how are Wraiths made? If its the old fashioned boy+girl way... or is it just something you're born as??? If she doesn't have babies with another wraith, then will their kind continue? The story isn't fast past or filled with action scenes, but instead has a suttle flow.
The writer is able to throw some funny scenes into the mix and the humor is cute.
Example:
"You mean by big f**** carrier pigeons?"
For some reason that line made me burst out laughing😄
The tension between the two characters feels a bit forced in the beginning but seems to adjust in its "pressure" throughout the book to be more believable. The instant love thing isnt my cup of tea. I prefer drama filled build ups.
Oh yea, did I miss the memo? Since when are Dark Elves "good"??? If an author is going to go against the normal assumptions then the author has to give a bit of explanation.
Also, in any book where magic is in the present day world AND out in the open, then it is assumed that humans are the majority. If that is true, then would the human world really allow a city of humans to be held captive, enslaved, tortured, and murdered without doing anything about it??? Nope. There would be coalitions and magic haters pounding at the gates. So if this is the case in this book, then why didn't anyone try to save the city? That's why I say that this bookk needed to at least be a urology but probably a trilogy. We could have gotten a back story on the world, the characters, a good rolled out love story, etc.
Another thing that bothered me is the point when Gabriel finds out that Saiya is a Wraith, he never acknowledges the things that he did to the Wraith he captured in the beginning of the book... wouldn't you think it would make him sick to his stomach or at least remorseful?
Hey Helen! You need a second book!

More Romance than Fantasy
I picked this up during an Audible sale without knowing anything beyond the summary. Honestly if I had known it was more a romance novel than a fantasy novel, I probably would've passed it by. The narrator was great but the story is only okay.
There is a surprising lack of world-building, descriptive text, or context for international readers. The author seems to assume think mentioning Stirling and its landmarks is sufficient. While I know Stirling is a city in Scotland, I've never been there so a little flavor text would really help set the mood. Similarly the story has goblins and dark elves in it, but we're never really told what they look like or their place in this world.
If you're looking for a romance novel with a little bit of fantasy flavoring, this might be for you. If you're looking for a new fantasy novel, this is probably not for you.

Wow, This book was terrible.
I have read a lot of books centred around Elves, Fae, Goblins and the like so I kinda feel I have a broad variety of some of the best to the worst and I have to admit this comes close to some of the worst. Personally it was incredibly boring. Vert predictable, cliche, the characters lacked any personality and the narration was incredibly dull.
If you are looking for a read to just pass time with a pretty storyline and happy ending then this is for you. If you like a bit more magic and mystery you will probably not enjoy this book.

Interesting quirks
Interesting story line, it starts of slow, I was not sure I was going to like it. It also took me s little while to get used to the narators voice and inflections.
I really rnjoyed it. I enjoyed the sarcasm humor, once the charactors are fleshed out the story becomes much more.
I will be looking for more from this author and narator.
Definitely recomend, keep an open mind.
