Since the death of her mother, Abigail Blakeslee has lost any desire to become a debutante and enter Society. But now, foregoing her first Season has brought an unwanted invitation to join her aunt and cousins for a summer at Timpton House, the large estate of the Stanton family. Reluctantly accepting, Abigail is thrust into the vexing world of social propriety and matchmaking she had hoped to avoid. Publisher's Summary
Kate Matcham needs a fortune or a husband. She wants neither. With a tainted inheritance in the balance, she receives one offer to become a scoundrel's mistress and another offer of a marriage of convenience. Before resigning herself to a choice, she accepts the invitation to visit a childhood friend, considering it a last hurrah before embarking on a bleak future.
The visit goes sideways when she falls for the gentleman her friend intends to marry, a man well out of Kate's league - and one who seems to be hiding something. Smuggling has overtaken the county, and it seems that everyone is complicit in the trade that killed her father.
One by one, her options dwindle as she struggles against her strengthening feelings for a duplicitous man, a determination not to hurt her friend, and keeping the promise she made long ago: To stand up to the people who killed her father.

Great story! Great romance! And clean!
This is the first book I've listened to from Martha Keyes. I enjoyed this book so much and it was over too soon. This was such a good story filled with intrigue, romance and great character development. I loved that I felt intimately acquainted with each one. The narrator, Eleanor Caudill, certainly brought this story to life and I felt like I was right there in the story with Kate. This will not be my last book from this author and I plan to get the next book in this series as soon as I finish the review. Thank you.

Great Debut Regency Romance
This was an enjoyable book! I did feel like it was lacking a little bit in romance throughout and then the ending was like boom! I understand for the plot it kind of needed to be this way, but I would have liked a little bit more throughout. It was interesting and fun to listen to. And I plan on reading or listening to the other books in the series! I recommend this audiobook!

Enjoyable, clean romance
I have loved all the books written by this author. She does a great job having romance, action and historical details all mixed together in her books- This one has all of that and more! The narrator did a great job. She has a great accent and a smooth voice. After reading a book by this author I always end up on google looking up facts about stuff- this time it was smugglers! I love books that make me want do research after reading them.

Okay
It was a decent listen for this genre with a few slow segments. There's a bit of step-by-step and over explaining, but with these types of books, that's the norm. I liked how one of the characters was doing some things wrong but had a surprisingly mature perspective about another thing. I enjoyed the upbeat voice of the narrator because so many narrators read with a dreary tone. So this narrator is good for these light, playful, historical romances. She was spot on with the tone, humor, and settings. She does occasionally slip into plain American accent and southern American accent. But if you aren’t picky about nuances and can overlook it, the overall listen is fine. I prefer those with North American accents not narrate British books, because it doesn't always sound natural and can be too sharp. But I overlook it to keep my library stocked, and I’ll probably continue with this series. (Just a side note to any authors who read reviews. If the women in these Regency books blush, have heat rise to their faces, or turn red as often as they are described to do so, they must look like they have permanent sunburns. How in the world does someone blush so much. I cringed through most of the over-used blushing in this one.)

Captivating
This story is unlike any other I’ve read. It takes a look at smuggling and the effects of it upon several different families, and intertwines that with a romance that ebbs and flows in surprising ways. I loved the thoughtful detail Martha Keyes employed while exploring the ideas of smuggling, spinsterhood, independence, and manners.
Eleanor Caudill was a DREAMY narrator — she gave such voice to this story! I felt like she reminded me of Hattie Morahan from Sense and Sensibility — that measured, soft voice was PERFECT for this story!

Good heavens. Everything I've read from Martha Keys has been delightful and hard to put down. This book was no exception. I feel completely satisfied (until her next book comes out). I loved the mature nature of the main character and Eleanor Caudill does an excellent job with the narration making her sound that way. All of her male characters were also excellently narorated. I 100% recommend this audiobook. You won't be disappointed.

Love, friendship and danger in historic setting.
Good story and characters narrated by very cheerful American voice, which somehow detracts from the story line at least in the beginning, as later you learn to adjust to the not quite as appropriate accent.
