In the Domains, those born with magic have only one place where they can prove themselves worthy of it: the brutal pits of the arena, where they will either grow in power and build a following with every victory, or risk dishonor and death in defeat. For these “Gladiators”, the ultimate prize for their struggle is a place among the Chosen, the immortal rulers of that vast and decadent empire.

Publisher's Summary
Maulkin and his Eternal buddies are on a roll. They're getting stronger, have two of the shards that will help prevent the return of an evil god, and even have a good idea where to find the rest.
Maybe Maulkin has taken a month off to hang out with his new elven girlfriend and learn how to swing his giant sword around, but hasn't he earned a holiday?
His reluctance to get out there and smack monsters definitely has nothing to do with the evil looking Voidgod powers that he's scared of telling the others about.... Or with Araphel's imminent return.... Or with having to fight a primordial dragon from the dawn of time....
Everything is fine. Shut up.

Good, but not great
I think this series is fun, but I have 2 major issues with this book. spoiler ahead.

.
.
.
.
the conflict between mercy and malkin felt overly forced. as if it came out of nowhere. it also resolved in a way that didn't make sense. he used the powers she feared, but then still sided with him, just because he jumped to save asher? I mean that's cool, but how many times since he got the shards did he do something similar?
next. it feels fast. like too fast. maybe this could have been stretched out over a few years or months, but we have a single time skip, and the 3 are taking down eternals thousands of years old, killing legendary warriors and even massive ancient dragons. all within 1 month of arriving on the world. maybe, just maybe there should have been more time for the characters to grow.

The first was so promising...
This review may be a bit jambled and will certainly contain Spoilers.
I am insanely upset and annoyed and annoyed and even tired by the main characters of these lit RPG books saying that they are dumb, stupid or fools, Is told me to turn around and act wise. It is even more frustrating when the main character doesn't every 5 seconds constantly referring to themselves as stupid.
To get specific malkin is the natural leader of his group. Everyone in the group defers to his thoughts on nearly every action. The actions that he takes are the right course and he seems to be the only one that can use both intellect and logic. Just like every other reviewer on here said, comma the mercy conflict is ridiculous. She has known malkin this time and knows all his actions are for the good, she knows that he is not evil.
If mulkin was incredibly wise and Articulate when he was talking to the eternal that was controlling the faun. He showed wisdom in his arguments about freedom and control and had a very well reasoned logic to take him down based on the fact that the only thing they listened to was strength.. That same eternal tried tried to mind control him. Yet when mercy called him a murderer instead of asking her friend exactly what happened he said the dumbest things in response to defend himself. It was just articulate and intelligent and now all of a sudden it's back to being dumb and not being able to explain yourself. Mercy turning around every 2 seconds to say oh I knew you were a bad guy and i knew i couldn't trust you.... Since when? You have literally trusted him this entire book and are basically best friends.
I could go on about that nonsense for a long time, comma there are a few other issues.. This is not a lit rpg book. It is yet another fantasy book with RPG elements that would be exactly the same without them. I know that the land has so many flaws and and can be off putting for many. However the one thing they do is the gaming elements. Out of every book it has to be my favorite for how detailed it is to the point where you could literally craft a video game around it. The numbers on health, the experience points, the glory. All of them are relevant. What you need to know is that after every major fight the character gets a new power. Is there aren't any real skill trees to speak of.
One of the last points that I really must dress is the ratio of jokes. Many of them are genuinely funny and clever but you don't get more than 3 sentences of what's going on before you get a joke is Doak which is some sort of ridiculous comparison or a story interrupting backstory joke from Earth. You get to a certain point where you basically want the main character to shut up. Some things that are happening are actually serious and most of the jokes are self deprecating which alludes to my 1st point. Malkin isn't anywhere near the vicinity of dumb. He also gets a power up that improves his cognition and I was hoping that would stop the "I am dumb jokes"
As soon as mercy started her nonsense I honestly almost quit the book. Spoilers ahead of this. When mercy his supposed friend starts freaking out at him using void powers when he just wants his girlfriend's spine be ripped out of her body I also nearly quit the book. Everything about her is unrealistic and it's to the point where I would be happy if he killed her. I also don't understand why instead of taking the other shard he let mercy have it. In general I was excited for this book and was massively disappointed. Not sure if I'll get the 3rd one or if 1 even deserves to be made.
This review is upsetting to me because I genuinely like Malkin. Is one of the best characters I have listened to in a while. Luke Daniels is becoming my favorite narrator. He truly has gifted and I think he has grown in his career. Maybe these characters showcase his ability better than others but hes on fire. Just more things that make me sad I'm not enjoying this book.

Great continuation
A really, really great continuation to a very enjoyable series. There was plenty of excitement and adventure and even a few heartfelt moments. True, it did drag at times, but the pacing picked up not long after those moments to not affect the overall momentum of the story. And it ended really well too. Looking forward to the next one.

Characters make and ruin this book.
This one was infuriating. Some really fun moments spoiled by such wildly changing characters. If it wasn’t for the amazing narration I would have gave up.
Mercy is the absolute worst “friend”. She is manipulative, verbally and physically abusive to both of her companions. Untrustworthy, suspicious, and rude to everyone, as well as a hypocrite who criticizes others for things she does or suggests to do.
Maulkin is the annoying type of character who says and does dumb things over and over when it is useful for the plot but pulls off very intelligent tactical moves. If it was explained as he only cares about fighting and that is what he focuses on that would be one thing, but we are told he is just dumb.
Asher is the only character who stays consistent with the only moments of “out of character” anger or despair very clearly explained and built up to.
And the game elements add nothing to the story, world, or mood. They are done much better in Luke’s other series - which is less fun but I enjoy more overall

Another great addition to the series!
There was no drop in quality on book 2. Everything about it was awesome. Didn’t expect to get so torn up when the saddest part of the whole series happened (no spoilers) but it guarantees I will be looking for book 3 to see it somehow get better! Amazing addition to the story, highly recommend to anyone. If you haven’t heard book 1 go start now

Outstanding narration and ending
I can't wait until book 3. I thought book 1 was ok, but book 2 was amazing. Mercy is still useless as ever, I mean what is she spending her points on? Anywho, besides that character every one else was well written. Some deaths surprised me hoping Maulkin can bring them back in book 3. I want to say more but I will give away too much of the book. Kudos to Luke Daniel's! He figured out how to edit out his air gasp between lines. Voice work was outstanding and he sounded like so many different characters and monsters. Overall a solid 5 out 5!

Good, fun, character based LitRPG lite
At the time of writing this, there are two books in the series, but it could end with this books and already be one of my favorite series.
The main character is a big doof, but I really enjoy the interaction of the main character and his closest companions.
Combined with a story that keeps moving at a good pace, but with a good cadence of action and reflection, just makes this really fun read.
