Publisher's Summary

In a land haunted by the legacy of dead dragons, Rowen Locke has been many things: orphan, gravedigger, mercenary. All he ever wanted was to become a Knight of Crane and wield a kingsteel sword against the kind of grown horrors his childhood knows all too well. But that dream crumbled - replaced by a new nightmare. War is overrunning the realms, an unprecedented duel of desire and revenge, steel and sorcery. And for one disgraced man who would be a knight, in a world where no one is blameless, the time has come to decide which side he's on.

Can't judge a book by it's cover.

I took a risk on this book and I am glad I did. The cover does not do the book justice. This book has good twists that will leave you wanting more. There is death, destruction, and even some of scene sex in this book. The book feels real in a way that many fantasies do not. I understand the character's decisions and they act like real people. Many fantasy books have a little too much drama for me when it comes to things like romance and feelings, this book has just enough to make you understand that the feelings are there without going on a rant.

Why did I only find this book by chance?!?

I'm so glad that I stumbled on this series! I've read/ listened to all of the top epic fantasy series. From there I went on to devour everything else those authors had produced. On average I listen to 6 - 10 hours per day, 7 days per week, so while I prefer to seek out books that are at least 20 hours, I go through a lot of credits! That means I am constantly looking for new material, and I've reached the point where there is little really great stuff left! - At least until my favorite authors have a new release.

That said, I stumbled on this book after an hour of hopeless browsing, looking at books that will last me only a day. Many reviews, many samples, many cases of lukewarm interest - but nothing that made me want to spend a credit. Then I stumbled on this book.

The hero is quite believable. He is never described as humble, or ordinary, yet he is. He could be the boy you wished lived next door. The author lets you decide that however. The characters reveal themselves through their words and actions, and each is motivated by a fully developed raison d'etre, not a flimsy plot device.

In other words, Wytchfire is well worth the credit! Great writing, great narration. I'd be happy to regale you with more reasons to to chance falling in love with this book, but I would really rather be downloading the next book!

Damn

I ate this book. I've listened to hundreds of fantasy books now and this stands out.
First the narration was great. The narrator used many tricks to make the voices sound different and I never had a moment of confusion when he switched between characters.
Second, the story was rich, the characters had depth, although less depth toward the end when more characters were involved.
Third, people died, often books feel like it's too easy or you can guess what is going to happen so they don't hit you as hard. This author did a fantastic job of giving hope and taking it away only to give it again. I really enjoyed this book.

Unmemorable

I'd say this was a waste of a credit if I hadn't bought it on sale. This book just never grabbed me. While I listened to this I couldn't stop surfing Audible for my next listen, which is never a good sign. There's a lot of magic in the book, but the author doesn't go into the magic system, much to my dismay. I find that it's easier to suspend disbelief when there is a well thought out magic system in place. The characters aren't well fleshed out either. The narrator is pretty good, but didn't bring any of the characters to life. It wasn't a good fit for me and I don't recommend it. If your looking for a long series that's something along the lines of Brandon Sanderson's work, or Robert Jordan's, or Robin Hobbs Farseer series, I recommend the House War speries, or Magic Casement series, or even the Rhapsody series. This isn't worth your time or credit.

Good, entertaining, worth a credit

Any additional comments?

Its a good book, not great but good. The narrator does a pretty good job with the characters and bringing you into the story. It is a little predictable, but nothing so horrible that makes the story boring. About all I can say really, worth a credit.

Difficult

I had a hard time with this book. I didn't like the way it developed, albeit, an interesting concept. Some books I have to force myself to quit reading, so as to get things done, but this one. I had to force myself to read it. I don't think I will continue with the next book. Even with all the great reviews.

Gripping and well read

A gripping story and characters that you fall in love with. All beautifully narrated by Craig Beck who does a great job of brining this adventure to life.

Great one.

This is a great book so much so before even finishing the book I purchased books 2 and 3. Can't be leave I didn't find this series before, at least I get to listen to them all at one time. Kind of reminds me of brandon sanderson and robin hobb really good, lots of good action and a good magic system. I don't think I have had this narrator before but he does a really good job and I could listen to him again. So if you want an ingaiging listen then give this ago.

keep going

if you feel the story is a bit slow to start with keep going. I found it a little slow to begin with and wondered where it was going. I found the narration slightly monotone in places which I think caused me to loose some of the hype. however over all I have given it 5 stara as it is refreshing general hero story with great characters and I will be reading the next book.
