“A deeply heartfelt romance novel.” —Marie Claire

“An unabashed ode to living with, and despite, pain and mortality.” —The New York Times Book Review

A New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and “one of our greatest living writers” (Shondaland) reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the overwhelming desire Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits—his father.

This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love? Akwaeke Emezi’s vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.

Very well written but...

I don't see this as a romance novel. It's a story about self-discovery with elements of romance. I love how this writer articulates her art and can't wait to read their other work...but once again, it's not a romance novel. Without giving spoilers, it was hard for me to believe this insta connection and all the messed up things they did to be together. I kind of feel like as soon as the book was over, they broke up. I guess I had too much hope for a non-romance writer. Plus, I know that my disappointment was based on this book feeling more like woman's literature with a HFN. honestly, the love intrest doesn't even show up till more thab half-way theough the book. Still recommend this as a good read, I just NEVER want to see these characters again.

Phenomenal

Let me start by saying that Bahni Turpin could read a receipt and I’d be all ears. The way her accent switched on this story so flawlessly and effortlessly, was astounding.

Initially I thought Feyi needed serious therapy and then found out she was in therapy. From sleeping with a guy at a party to “dating” a guy and being flown out, to falling for the guys father was MESSY! And not only that, her best friend whom she lives with, ate the box years ago and they’re still cool.

When the ish hit the fan and Nassir (spelling because I listened to the audiobook) ripped into her, and then she put on her big girl panties and let him know he was out of line was chef’s kiss. And what made it better was when he tried to throw her out and his father let him know she wasn’t going anywhere and that was his house. Alim (spelling) can get it. All day every day. He is a real man.

Lorraine didn’t like Feyi from jump, and I don’t know why, but she especially doesn’t like her now.

I loved the LGBTQ representation on the book. The story itself flowed smoothly and the range of emotions that were brought to life could be felt. I first heard about this book on TikTok and the way it was presented made me want to get it. I’m glad I did.

Love Love Love

I was apprehensive if I would like this book due to the first couple of line but after further listening I enjoyed this story immensely. I hated that the book ended. I was totally drawn in. This is story of love and lost and finding love again in the most unexpected place. This is the first time I read a story by this author but it will not be last. I highly recommend this book.

Renewal

This book is definitely not for tte weak minded and displays how love lost can turn into love found in the most unlikely place. Knowing your limitations and being able to communicate is real adulting. This book highlights the importance of being self aware.

It’s okay

It’s okay. I found myself not really rooting for the main characters and definitely want more of the side character, Joy. Joy made this audiobook/story much more enjoyable!

A little fun, a little heavy; not that predictable

This is a fun story, even with its heavy themes. There is the idea of a vacation, but it is its own sort of coming home. The main character may come across as reckless at first, but she is a hero of sorts, pushing past pain and choosing the best path for herself. There are parts that seen predictable, but most things turn out at least a little bit different from the way one might expect.
