The story is about the birth of a baby boy in a 19th-century gold prospecting camp. The boy's mother, Cherokee Sal, dies in childbirth, so the men of Roaring Camp must raise it themselves. Believing the child to be a good luck charm, the miners christen the boy Thomas Luck. Afterwards, they decide to refine their behavior and refrain from gambling and fighting. At the end of the story, however, Luck and a villager, Kentuck, perish in a flash flood that strikes the camp.

Here, Laurence Olivier tells the tale of Thomas Luck in this adaptation of Bret Harte's The Luck of Roaring Camp, first published in Overland Monthly in 1868. During the Californian gold rush a child is born to the only woman in the camp and, for a short time, he indeed brings luck. "Theatre Royal" is a series of radio dramas first broadcast by the BBC in 1953 and in the USA soon after. Starring many of Britain's finest actors, it was the only radio series in which Lord Olivier took a major role.

Bret Harte was an American short-story writer and poet, best remembered for his short fiction featuring miners, gamblers, and other romantic figures of the California Gold Rush. The miners start to turn their lives around in order to be a better example to the shining boy. But just as their ship seems to have come in, disaster hits, and it soon goes out again in this gripping yet tragic work of historical fiction.

Originally published in Harte's 1875 short-story collection The Tales of the Argonauts, "How Santa Claus Came to Simpson's Bar" is set in California in the early 1860s and, like the rest of the tales in that collection, features the gold-seeking Argonauts. In this tale, like many of Harte's others, the folly and grit of human existence balance any good intentions, good cheer, or hope, resulting in a more complicated and somewhat bleak ending than is commonly found in most Christmas tales.

Bret Harte (1836 - 1902) was an American writer and poet, most famous for his short fiction featuring miners, gamblers, and other romantic figures of the California Gold Rush. The Idyll of Red Gulch portrays an incident in a town in California involving the town drunk, a prostitute, and the schoolmistress.
