Sappho was a female poet who was well known in ancient Greece and Rome for her lyrical poetry. She was most famous for her poems involving women who loved women, and it is from her name that sapphic, a term referring to sexual relations between women, originated. This is a compendium of her surviving work, a collection of 54 fragments translated by Henry de Vere Stacpoole.

Cosa accadrebbe se "la Natura, a titolo di esperimento, riportasse nel suo seno due boccioli cresciuti in serra” e preservati da ogni duro contatto con la realtà? Cosa ne sarebbe di due bambini cresciuti senza sapere che cosa sono nascita e morte, e costretti poi a scoprire la vita da soli? Questo libro, reso di nuovo celebre oggi dal film che ne è stato tratto, è, per alcuni versi, difficile e crudele. Ma per altri versi l'autore descrive, con la poesia del suo cuore irlandese, una bellezza incontaminata che oggi possiamo soltanto sognare.
