Institutes of the Christian Religion is John Calvin's seminal work on Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world and still widely read by theological students today, it was published in Latin in 1536 and in his native French in 1541. The Necessity of Reforming the Church has been considered by many to be one of John Calvin's most important works. In this short letter, Calvin lays out his polemic for why the church must bring her beliefs and practices in line with scripture. John Calvin (1509-1564) was a theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. This collection of prayers comes from his writings on the book of Hosea.

The theological insights of Calvin and the Reformers not only provided the theological basis to support the future massive missionary expansion of Protestant churches, but emphasises the Church mission as a consequence of their theology. This sermon by the Reformer focuses on St. Paul and his command to pray for all people. The mercy of God extends to all the world, he argues, and is not anymore restricted to only a specific group. 

"On the Christian Life" by John Calvin consists of chapters 6 through 10 of book 3 of the Institutes. It includes chapters on "Scriptural arguments exhorting us to holiness", "Self-denial and bearing the cross", "Aspiring to the future life", and "Rightly using the present life and its comforts."

Prayer as Calvin describes it is not giddy, and he goes on to give Scriptural definitions of proper thought, engagement, and attitude. John Calvin describes the Catholic Church as “very miserable, and almost desperate” in this 1543 work. He appeals directly to Holy Roman Emperor King Charles V, pointing out the failures of the church and demanding change. On behalf of the reformers, Calvin details his proposed solution.
