Rabindranath Tagore, India's foremost writer and the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature, is perhaps best known for his tender and passionate tales about human yearning and longing. Here then is a collection of 18 short stories that highlight Tagore's profound vision.

A collection of essays on the Hindu/Buddhist view of humankind's place in the universe. As the author says in his introduction: "in these papers, it may be hoped, western readers will have an opportunity of coming into touch with the ancient spirit of India as revealed in our sacred texts and manifested in the life of to-day." Most of the essays were given as lectures before Harvard University in 1916 or before.

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, visual artist, playwright, novelist, and composer. Nikhil is a passive landowner. His houseguest is Sandip, a headstrong anti-imperialist. Between them is Nikhil’s wife, Bimala, dutiful to her conventional husband yet drawn to the fiery independence and bold flirtations of the charismatic Sandip. As Bimala questions her role as a woman and the possibilities for her life outside marriage, the three undergo an emotional struggle that will change their lives forever—just as their country undergoes a radical upheaval of its own. 

"Sadhana, The Realisation of Life" (1913) is a book of meditation by Rabindranath Tagore. Excerpt from the work: "Perhaps it is well for me to explain that the subject-matter of the papers published in this book has not been philosophically treated, nor has it been approached from the scholar's point of view.

We are face to face with this great world, and our relations to it are manifold. One of these is the necessity we have to live, to till the soil, to gather food, to clothe ourselves, to get materials from nature. We are always making things that will satisfy our needs, always in touch with this great world through hunger and thirst. Then, we have our mind; and our mind seeks its own food. It must find out reason in things, faced with a multiplicity of facts, and bewildered when it cannot find one unifying principle which simplifies the heterogeneity of things.

Set on a Bengali noble's estate in 1908, this is both a love story and a novel of political awakening. The central character, Bimala, is torn between the duties owed to her husband, Nikhil, and the demands made on her by the radical leader, Sandip. Her attempts to resolve the irreconcilable pressures of the home and world reflect the conflict in India itself, and the tragic outcome foreshadows the unrest that accompanied Partition in 1947.

Rabindranath Tagore, author of The Gardener, was an Indian poet and the first poet of any nationality ever to win the Nobel Laureate for Literature, awarded to him in 1913. He captivated India and the entire western world with the beauty of the lyrics in his poetry. His talent and undeniably beautiful lyrical poetic style are especially evident in this poem, written in prose in 85 verses and entitled The Gardener. Also known as The Book of Love, the poem uniquely expresses the ideas of love and the unity of humanity with universe.

Tagore was a true Renaissance man, distinguishing himself as a gifted philosopher, social and political reformer as well as a popular author in all literary genres. His most famous poem, extracts of which are recorded here, is Gitanjali which earned him the distinction of the first Asian writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.
