The fame of the The Royal Game is evident in the number of translations. The last work of the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig can be read today in over 60 languages. The first translation into English appeared in New York in 1944. In Germany, the book has become a constant bestseller. The first-person narrator learns of the presence of the world chess champion Mirko Czentovic on a boat trip from New York to Buenos Aires. Together with his acquaintance Mc Connor and other chess players, the first-person narrator manages to challenge the world champion to a game of chess.

"Der versiegelte Zug" ist ein Teil von Stefan Zweigs "Sternstunden der Menschheit", eine Sammlung historischer Prosa-Miniaturen. Dieser Teil handelt von der Reise Lenins im plombierten Zug, der ihn und weitere Emigranten von der Schweiz nach Russland führt. Doch die Rückreise, die unter anderem durch das Feindland Deutschland führt, ist nicht ungefährlich.

"Die Weltminute von Waterloo" ist ein Teil von Stefan Zweigs "Sternstunden der Menschheit", eine Sammlung historischer Prosa-Miniaturen. Die acht sprachlich verdichteten Kapitel handeln von Napoleons bedeutender Schlacht bei Waterloo. Fesselnd werden dabei die wetterbedingten Schwierigkeiten der Truppen sowie die Rolle des Generals Emmanuel de Grouchy beleuchtet.

A suave baron takes a fancy to twelve-year-old Edgar's mother, while the three are holidaying in an Austrian mountain resort. His initial advances rejected, the baron befriends Edgar in order to get closer to the woman he desires. The initially unsuspecting child soon senses something is amiss, but has no idea of the burning secret that is driving the affair, and that will soon change his life for ever.

Stefan Zweig dedicated this largely biographical work to the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Zweig acknowledges Freud's scientific contributions and highlights some weaknesses of his fellow countryman. Freud's actual achievement is less to be found in scientific detail, but in the multitude of his contributions with which he enabled and inspired the thinking, rethinking and research of many of his successors. Zweig describes the life of Freud and the genesis of psychoanalysis with his usual linguistic virtuosity.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception.

1834: Johann August Sutter, a cloth merchant based in Burgdorf in the canton of Bern in Switzerland, went bankrupt with fraudulent intent and was subsequently wanted on an arrest warrant. To escape the authorities, Suter immigrated to the United States and briefly became the richest man in the world thanks to his entrepreneurial activities and land holdings. Much gold was found on his California land during the gold rush and prospectors contested his ownership. In the end, Suter lost his entire fortune.

Lenin's journey in a sealed train took place in April 1917 during the First World War. The journey took Vladimir Ilyich Lenin together with other emigrants from Swiss exile through the German Reich via Scandinavia to Petrograd, today's Saint Petersburg. The "sealed train" was only used on the German part of the route. Lenin's arrival in Russia led to the 1917 revolution and the peace treaty between Russia and Germany in March 1918.

Auf einer Schiffsreise von New York nach Buenos Aires kommt der Ich-Erzähler dem arroganten Schachweltmeister Mirko Czentovic erst nahe, als sich dieser bereit erklärt, gegen alle Hobbyspieler gemeinsam eine Partie zu spielen. Als diese schon verloren scheint, greift ein Dr. B. in das Spiel ein und holt gegen Czentovic noch ein Remis heraus. Durch Dr. B.s seltsames Spielfieber neugierig gemacht, will der Ich-Erzähler mehr von ihm erfahren. Daraufhin berichtet ihm Dr. B. von seiner monatelangen Einzelhaft im Wiener Gestapo-Gefängnis, wo er dem Irrewerden nur dadurch entkam, dass er aus einem entwendeten Schachbuch Meisterpartien nachspielte.

"Il ne savait ni sourire, ni plaire, ni se rendre agréable ; il était en outre incapable d'exposer ses idées avec éloquence". Peu loquace, renfermé, retranché dans son isolement, cet éternel solitaire créait autour de lui une glaciale atmosphère de gêne et de méfiance. Il montera pourtant une expédition avec cinq navires et 250 hommes, sous l'égide du roi Carlos 1er (Charles Quint).
